Garden to Families
A great thing happened the night of the Obama Inauguration Party in Murphys.
One of the speakers, County Supervisor Steve Wilensky, spoke about how engaging during these tough times will go a long way towards make things right again in our economy, our communities, and our collective community soul. Steve suggested participating in the newly formed Garden to Families program which coordinates the growing of fruits and vegetables in gardens with harvesting, and transport to a local food pantry or the Resource Connection Food Bank. This year the need is critical and federal food assistance does not include fresh fruit and vegetables.
A number of listeners took his plea to heart and did something about it.
The pictures below tell the story:

Seeds purchased, planted and lovingly cared for in Murphys are readied for their trip to the Paloma garden

Garage gardners, Kelly and Tracy Ellifritz

Destination: Paloma Community Garden

Paloma garden is covered in strawberry and daikon radish crops. These plants help prepare the soil for summer crops.

What would gardening be without weeding? Brett and Lauren Wilson of Paloma know how to get 'er done.

I hold a corn seedling while digging the hole

Somehow I get this done while wearing this skirt and heels. Heh.

OK. I didn't plan this part but I blend right in, don't I?

Where is that fitting? I know its here among these other fittings....

Diane Kriletich eyes the prize: a drip watering system to lower water costs

Never, never underestimate the energy of our youth. Lauren Wilson planted ALL the corn seedlings!

Cheerfully! Imagine all the happy faces when freshly roasted corn is part of their summer meal. Thanks Lauren!

Great job to all involved at Paloma!! Maybe a logo for all of these Calaveras gardens could be a dove (paloma) with a radish or lettuce leaf in beak.
Just heard that all Measure 1’s were defeated…more gardens will be needed ASAP.
What a lovely garden to be and a lovely group of generous people!
I’m moved by this happy, non-controversial story. Everyone needs to eat! Let a thousand gardens bloom!
It’s true. Volunteers mostly did just a little. Adding up all these little bits creates one awesome project!
Awesome, just awesome!
